Description

Dating back to the late 1800s, smokehouse locks, originally designed in England, were formed from wrought iron sheet and used simple lever and ward mechanisms.

Farmers commonly used these to secure their meat in smokehouses or tobacco in drying houses to prevent poachers from stealing it. However, contrary to their looks, these locks afforded little protection against forced and surreptitious entry and could easily be opened with little effort or force.
